Penile Cancer – Sign, Sypmtomps, Diagnosis and Treatment
Penile cancer is extremely rare in the United States affecting only about one percent of men each year. In Britain around 400 men a year are diagnosed with cancer of the penis and it mostly affects men who are 60 of age or older.
This type of cancer is rare in Jewish and Muslim men who are circumcised routinely shortly after birth.
Risk, Sign, Sypmtomps, Diagnosis and Treatment of penile cancer :
The risks for penile cancer
Age: Most cases are seen in men between ages 45 and 75, although nearly a third of cases occur in men under age 50. HPV-16 and HPV-18 are most frequently linked to penile cancer. There is an association between cancer of the penis and poor genital hygiene and phimosis.
Phimosis: Phimosis refers to a tightening of the penile foreskin that prevents its retraction over the glans.
Signs and symptoms
A tumor most frequently occurs on the glans (tip) and on the inner lip of the foreskin if intact. Most men are hesitant to discuss any penile changes with their health care provider.
Penile cancer symptoms may include:
A wart-like growth, lump or lesion (often genital warts).
Penis pain or bleeding that occurs when the disease is advanced.
The first signs penile cancer is most likely to be changes in the color and thickness of the skin of the penis.
Most penile cancers are painless.
Diagnosis
The specialist will examine the whole of the penis and the lymph nodes in your groin. If the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes they may be enlarged. If the biopsy comes back positive for cancer then to assess the seriousness most doctors will do more test to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread into the body.
Cancer is spread through either the blood of through the lymphatic system. The scan can show whether or not the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Lymph node biopsy if you have any enlarged lymph nodes in the groin, your doctor may put a needle into the node to get a sample of cells.
Treatment
Surgery remains the most common form of treatment. Total penectomy involves removal of the entire penis and is reserved for big tumors. Penile reconstructive surgery affects using skin from the buttocks or forearm to create a new penis. This type of cancer can be extremely psychologically devastating. penile cancer is cancer of the penis, the male sex organ, and it is not as common as other forms. The prognosis is determined by the stage of the cancer, the location and the size of the tumor, and whether the cancer was just diagnosed or is recurring. Those stages include Stage 0, Stage I, Stage II, Stage III, Stage IV and recurrent cancer. Stage I is when the cancer has formed and spread to connective tissue just under the skin of the penis.
Stage II is when the cancer has spread to the tissue of just under the skin of the penis and to one lymph node in the groin or erectile tissue and may have spread to one lymph node in the groin. Stage III penile cancer is when the cancer has spread to the connective tissue or erectile tissue of the penis and to more than one lymph node on one or both sides of the groin or has spread to the urethra or the prostate. Stage IV is when the cancer has spread to tissues near the penis and may have spread to lymph nodes in the groin or the pelvis or has spread to anywhere in or near the penis or to other distant parts of the body. Recurring penile cancer is cancer that has gone away and came back again. The cancer can come back in the penis or in other parts of the body.
Penile cancer is much rarer and Cancer of the penis is not contagious either.
The research into penis cancer is not very advanced and not much is known about it. The human papilloma virus human (HPV) that causes penile warts also increases the risk of penile cancer.
